Rectal cancer diagnosis and operation

Hi just to say Hello and that I was diagnosed with rectal cancer last year had radiotherapy and chemo tablets to shrink tumour and 3 weeks ago had an APER and now home. I am normally a very active lady but this has wiped me out and I am very sore around nether regions.  Hoe er the stoma at least is working well.  Just wonder if anyone else has had this procedure and how soon they improved. Thanx

  • Hello Jamar and welcome to Cancer Chat.

It's great to hear the treatment you had helped shrink the tumour and you were able to have an APER, although I'm sorry about the difficulties you've been contending with since having the op.

Hopefully some of our members who have had this surgery and been fitted with a stoma will be along soon to share their experiences and advice but if you'd like to discuss any of this with one of our cancer nurses, you can give them a call on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. Our nurses are very easy to talk to and will do all they can to help.

I'm not sure if you are already in touch with Bowel Cancer UK, but if not, it may be worth reaching out to them as well for further support and advice.

We're thinking of you Jamar and wishing you all the best with your recovery.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
