What happens when hysteroscopy fails?

Hi, I am new to this group. Have been struggling with heavy periods for last 11 years, and am 55yo. Had 3rd Mirvena removed at beginning of this year after 6 years. It had to be put in under GA and first attempt at Hysteroscopy failed. Also ultrasound shows multiple fibroids. I was d/c from gynaecology. My periods continued to be heavy and 2.5 years ago started bleeding almost continually… referred to Gynaecology. Had ultrasound scans, and thickening of womb and fibroids.  Also Mirena coil in wrong place. After a year of waiting to be seen I went privately for a consultation as advised by gp to kick start my referral. All along I have been asking for hysterectomy. Consultant  suggests hysterectomy and I say first one failed to access. After another year of waiting, bloating, gastric and peeing issues I go to gp asking for second opinion, and they were great. Finally have day surgery January 2024…. They can’t get  complete hysteroscopy. No biopsy either. I had my coil removed. Offered hysterectomy finally! Am now on a long list waiting for consultation for hysterectomy. Am about to make a complaint. My health is complicated by kidney and lung genetic issues which rule out hormone intervention. I had breast cancer 4 years ago - not hormone sensitive. Am really anxious I have uterine or ovarian cancer and feel very let down. Any advice?

  • Hysteroscopy rather than hysterecomy after gp!

  • Hello Kpderby,

Poor you, you certainly have been through a lot. It's good you went to the GP asking for a second opinion but how unfortunate that the hysteroscopy failed and there were no biopsies taken either and you now find yourself on a long waiting list. Having had breast cancer as well 4 years ago and all these kidney and lung genetic issues must make things even more complicated. It's perfectly legitimate to feel let down in a situation like this. Our website has detailed information on how to complain about healthcare services which I hope you will find useful.

I hope that you will hear from other members of our community who have been through a similar experience to you and that they will have some good suggestions and advice for you based on their personal stories.

I hope that you get somewhere with this soon and that it all turns out to be nothing of concern.

    Best wishes,
