Rectal cancer - treatment, surgery, stoma

Hi. Just joined the forum. I was diagnosed with 5cm stage 2/3 rectal cancer two weeks ago

I've not started treatment yet, currently waiting for a planning scan for radiochemotherapy, hopefully to start treatment in the next three weeks or so. I've been told there is a very small chance of "complete response" to radio and chemo. But most likely I will need full APR surgery and a permanent stoma. That was pretty tough news to hear.

I'd love to hear from anyone who has any experience or advice about this road I'm on. Especially if there are any choices to be made. Anyone looked into medical trials? Is there any point trying to go private for any parts of the treatment?

Thanks.

M

  • Hi Mich1,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I can understand this must be a lot to process - I hope you are getting on OK, and that it's not too long for you to wait to hear more about the next steps.

I hope you don't mind but I have edited the title of your post, to hopefully encourage more replies, particularly from others with similar experience.

You may also wish to search the forum - using the bar at the top of the page - for other potentially relevant discussions and people to connect with.

If you'd like information about clinical trials, we have a page on our website about this. Likewise we have a page about private treatment.

In the meantime, hope that this forum can be of some help to you.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben

  • Hi

I'm sorry to hear you're going through this. My fiance was diagnosed with exactly the same in June 2023. He had 5 weeks of radio and chemo to reduce the tumour because it was too close to the bladder wall so wanted to shrink it and make it easier to remove.  He had the op in January and having been told he may need a temporary stoma bag, he was lucky enough to avoid this. We are now waiting for him to start 3 months of chemo just to ensure they removed all the cancer before rescanning. We hope that's the case, but with cancer and this journey, you just have to hope for the best and try and stay positive.

We did consider private treatments but although undoubtedly slower on the NHS because they are so overwhelmed  the treatment and dedication of everyone in the NHS has been wonderful.

I hope you get your dates to start your treatment soon, take care of yourself.

  • Thank you CF69. That's good to hear that the radiochemo worked well for your Fiancé. Wishing you both well for the future.

How did they find the side effects?

  • He was pretty lucky, as the weeks went on he felt tired, but that was all
