Colonoscopy worries

Hi

I am new to the group.

I am a 60 year old female from NE Scotland.

During the bowel screening back in December 2023, blood was found, so I have to go for a colonoscopy.

I've finally got my appointment for 14th March.

I have been told they will sedate me, which I am really worried about.

I have left bundle branch block and really concerned about how the sedative affects your heart rate.

Some people have said they felt no pain without being sedated, whilst others have said the opposite.

I'm not sure whether to go with sedation as I don't know the effects on my heart, but on the other hand, I'm worried about it being too painful.

Any advice would be appreciated

  • Hi, i had a colonoscopy a few months ago and was absolutely petrified. I knew from the start i was going to ask to be sedated. I can honestly say to you try not to worry. I was only aware of the initial procedure but it was painless and for me it only lasted about 15-20 mins. If anything it was  waiting for the procedure that was the worst.

    Good luck x

  • Hi, I had a colonoscopy with sedation last year. The sedation definitely made me feel calm and relaxed, but I would say the colonoscopy was still quite uncomfortable (but manageable!).
I would say most pain was felt as they tried to get round the bends of the colon, so it wasn’t uncomfortable for the entire time, just short bursts. Hope it all goes okay x

  • Hi I had a colonoscopy last week. I opted for sedation which I was given. When it got a little too uncomfortable they gave me gas and air as well for a short time. The procedure doesn’t take too long. I hope it goes ok for you.
