Colon cancer

Hi, I was diagnosed with stage 2 colon cancer in December 2023 after showing blood in my stools which was going on for a few months and I just thought it would go away. Anyway I went to my GP who fast tracked me for a colonoscopy. It was confirmed there and then that they had found a 35mm tumor and was told that by going to my GP early that they had caught it early. Following on from that I had a CT scan MRI scan and then I had my operation Jan this year which they took a part of my bowel and rejoined it and now I have a temporary stoma. I am now recovering. They said my results would take about 4 weeks to come back. Anyway I've had a telephone call regarding my results which is positive news saying I don't need any further treatment like chemotherapy which I'm happy about but I just keep thinking what if they've missed some lump nodes. I can't help feeling anxious.

Feeling a mix of emotions

I would also like to say how brilliant the NHS have been throughout my diagnosis.

  • Hello Suebo,

Thank you very much for coming here and sharing your colon cancer story. You did well to go and see the GP when you noticed blood in your stools - this is often a red flag that requires investigation and your GP was brilliant in referring you to have the colonoscopy which a very reliable diagnostic tool. As you rightly pointed out, by going to see your GP early and your GP referring you it's really good news that they caught it early. I hope that you are recovering well from your operation and coping well with the temporary stoma. It's normal to feel anxious after everything you've been through and you want to make sure that you definitely don't need any chemotherapy treatment or any further action - there's often this feeling that something has been missed. Do talk to your GP or medical team about these worries so that you can be fully reassured and can move on with your life feeling grateful that this was caught in time. Don't hesitate to ask too - but they may have told you already -  how often you will be monitored from now on, if they need to keep an eye on things regularly.

Your story is a positive one and an inspirational one too and it's nice to hear that the NHS has been so wonderful to you throughout your diagnosis and they certainly seem to have been fantastic and it looks like things moved really fast. If you don't mind, keep in touch and let us know how you get on!

    Best wishes,
