Bowel Cancer survivor

Hi, my name is Steve, I am not used to typing in discussions and am normally reserved. I was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2015 and had left side of bowel removed and had chemo during 2016. I have panics when I get aches and pains thinking it’s back. Have frustration because I cannot do the sporting activities I did before. Wouu I’m ld just like to communicate and help where I can.

  • Hello Steve and a warm welcome to Cancer Chat,

Thank you so much for having the courage to come here and share your story especially as you mentioned you are normally reserved but our members, some of whom may be going through a bowel cancer diagnosis, will truly appreciate hearing your story and it will no doubt be inspirational to them as they may have also had part of their bowel removed or they may be going through chemotherapy. It's always nice to hear from someone who has been through it all before and come through the other end. It's totally understandable that you have those panicky feelings whenever you get these aches and pains and that you are worried it is back. It must be frustrating too not to be able to do the sporting activities you could do before but I hope that you have managed to adapt these or replace them with new hobbies so that you can continue to enjoy life to the full and do things that make you happy.

Thank you so much for your offer to help and communicate. I will certainly bear your story in mind and will make other members aware of it. I hope that you are doing well now nearly 10 years after your initial diagnosis.

    Best wishes,

    Lucie, Cancer Chat Moderator

  • Hi Steve as someone newly diagnosed and waiting for a scan it’s good to hear from someone who had been through it all with a positive outcome. It’s made me stop and take a breath so thank you.

  • Hi Beverley

I am pleased my note has helped. This may be of assistance, when I was first diagnosed I was stunned and world stopped for a while but I then said to myself "be positive and take one step at a time, don't dwell on things just look at what needs to be tackled next and take it from there.

  • Hi Steviebowrk thank you for that. It’s good advice and I’ll try to do the same.
