After bowel surgery

I had bowel surgery on the 18th Dec 2023 and was discharged on 26th after successful surgery. I was lucky I didn't need a Stoma or Chemo just quarterly bloods done. I'm now on my 9th week after surgery but in the last week I've had old symptoms return unrelated to the cancer. I feel nauseous, bloated, but I do eat food. It seems to happen after a bowel motion. I'm not sure if it's a food I'm reacting to or an infection. I do have diverticulitis disease but I'm unable to control it. Can anyone help me? Anyone out there think I should be sticking to a certain diet? Should I have been more cautious about eating regular food too soon after surgery?

Thank you.

  • Hi Prionsias and welcome to Cancer Chat.

I'm glad to hear your surgery was a success although I'm sorry about the symptoms you've been contending with since then.

I hope this information we have about the possible problems and bowel changes that can occur after surgery will help shed some light on your situation, but if you're worried or feel things are getting worse, do be sure to get in touch with your GP or medical team for further information and advice.

Hopefully some of our bowel cancer members who have contended with similar issues after surgery will share their experiences and advice with you soon, but if you'd like to talk things through with one of our cancer nurses, they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very easy to talk to and will do all they can to answer your questions and put your mind at ease. Bowel Cancer UK may be able to help as well.

    Kind regards,

  • Thanks Steph I appreciate this. Prior to my cancer diagnosis and surgery I was suffering from IBS which eased while I was in hospital.  It's now 9 weeks since surgery but last week the IBS came back to haunt me. I get severe bloating and discomfort around the navel area. My doctor checked the area concerned with my surgery and said it was more than likely the IBS. He prescribed Buscopan 3 a day. I have to admit they have eased the disturbance very well but I still have a slight burning sensation. I can only take the doctors word for it and go with what he says although sometimes I doubt his diagnosis. It could be a severe allergy to something I'm eating or from the other meds I take for other health issues. The mind boggles.
