Confused

Hi my brother was diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer in 2019 and died 6mths later. It was a massive shock as my brother down played it. My Dad then got Esophagus cancer, had surgery and treatment and 4 years later is still here. His cancer returned 2023 and he was told it was inoperable. But he had treatment. Unfortunately it made him feel so terrible, he stopped the treatment. He looks ill, he's in pain, falls asleep as he's so tired all the time and gets periods of terrible nausea. He also doesn't eat at the moment. I'm really worried about him but am in the dark, like I was with my brother, as my dad does not want me to know the full extent of his illness. Anyone experienced in these things? Is it usual for one cancer to kill in 6mths and another to be inoperable but living for 4 years? Also, does cancer with treatment stopped make you nauseous and not eat, fall asleep and in pain? Also, he said something really weird yesterday and I thought he had a little dementia, like he forgot who I was, is that normal? Just want some answers.

  • Hi Dudders72,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to hear of the situation with your Dad, and what you have been through recently - this sounds like a lot to deal with.

Hopefully your Dad will tell you a little more about what's going on - I'm not sure how much you have spoken to him about this, but of course it would be beneficial for you to understand a little more in order to be able to know what to expect and to offer any support, so hopefully you can explain this and find out more.

In terms of your questions, you may wish to post in the 'Ask the Nurses' section of this forum to get a response from one of our nurses. Or you can call freephone 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5.

We're always here for support if you need it and I hope that the forum can be helpful for you.

    Wishing you all the best,
