Fast tracked for Melanoma

Hi everyone

well, it’s been a bit of a whirlwind. I found a suspicious mole/lesion  2 weeks ago. I went to my GP the next morning and he straight away said he didn’t like the look of it. It measured 32mm x 17mm so was quite significant. He sent photos and a request for a fast track appointment. That was on the Thursday afternoon. My referral was received and reviewed on the Monday and I was contacted to go to the dermatology clinic for photos the next morning. I was told I’d be contacted in due course. This was Tuesday afternoon

On the Friday morning I was contacted and told that my photos had been reviewed and I was to go in the next morning for an excision - 18 stitches later I was back home resting

On the Wednesday afternoon I had a call from the hospital which turned out to be a call that I should have had before going in for surgery to explain the what’s, why’s and how’s. The nurse was apologetic and explained that because I had been fast tracked through the system so quickly she didn’t have an opportunity to contact me before hand and asked if I had any questions

My only question at this minute is why haven’t I had an appointment with a consultant yet. I’m completely in the dark and my imagination is running mad with the speed of everything so can only think the worse

Is this normal to be seen and had treatment so quickly?

  • Hi,

I can't say that the speed of your mole removal is normal practice. However, I know that some hospitals have such a backlog that they are having weekend surgical clinics to try and speed things up and they are contacting patients to go for surgery within days (I've been awaiting a removal and I recently received a call with a surgical appointment for 2 days later, on a Saturday).

I hope the nurse left you a contact number in case you have any questions and I hope you aren't waiting too long for the results. Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)
