AML with MDS survivor

I was told that I had 1 month to live without treatment & 6 months with treatment. That was 4 years ago! Thanks to a wonderful young man in the UK who donated his cells for me to be able to receive a bone marrow transplant I went into remission. You have to watch for things like graft vs host disease (gvhd). Which is scary. There's an explanation for it that's lengthy. We're trying to get the word out about these life aging cell donations. He wasn't told how sick I really was. We have since been able to connect. It's awesome! What people don't tell you is that things don't go back to normal after you reach remission. You now have a different kind of normal.

  • Hello Starfire41102

Welcome to the forum and thank you for sharing your story. It's great to hear that following your bone marrow transplant you're doing so well.

You're right when you say about finding a new kind of normal after going through treatment for cancer although this isn't always necessarily a bad thing.

For anyone interested in more information about bone marrow transplants or donations they may be interested to look at the Anthony Nolan charity website.

I do hope that at some point in the future, your story will give hope and reassurance to another person who finds themselves in a similar situation.

Sending you and your donor my very best wishes,
