Have been diagnosed with bladder cancer and not sure which way to go

I have been diagnosed with bladder cancer and advised to having it out, but been given a 1in20 chance of surviving operation, and 1 in 10 chance of having a heart, cstroke etc. Or a serious infection some time after op. I don't think my odds of having the ops is worth it so think just go with radiotherapy any one been in this situation??

  • Hello Newel,

I am so sorry to hear about your bladder cancer diagnosis and about the odds you have been given for your operation. I can understand why this is such a difficult decision for you to have to take and you will need to carefully weigh all the pros and cons. It may be worth talking things through with your consultant and seeing what they advise you do. Our cancer nurses are also available on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

There is information on our website on bladder cancer  including on treatment for bladder cancer which you might be interested in having a look at. I hope that you will hear from the experiences of others who have been diagnosed with bladder cancer and who have had to make similar treatment choices. I've had a look on the forum for recent threads by members who have also been diagnosed with bladder cancer and found a few threads you might be interested in having a look at and feel free to respond if you wish to do so.  posted her bladder cancer story only yesterday and could be a good person for you to exchange experiences with. Another member  also posted his bladder cancer diagnosis thread and  who was diagnosed with bladder cancer last April would also be a great person for you to connect with.

I've also slightly edited the title of your thread so that it includes the words 'bladder cancer' making it easier for others who have had this diagnosis to see your post and reply.

I hope that this helps a little and that you will soon get chatting here to others who have faced similar treatment choices and who will be happy to share stories and experiences with you.

    Best wishes,
