Living with breast cancer

I am a nearly 73 year old gran of four and mother of three and have had breast cancer for 16 years. Found a. Cancer through a routine mammogram retired about 2 months later,

had treatment a lumpectomy and radiotherapy and Chemo. Only had one session. Couldn’t take it but all my hair fell out, I think I had the extra strong dose.
After all these years I am finally coming to terms with it and it is not my complete focus everyday. I have secondary cancer in my back.
But I am very lucky to still be here and enjoying life albeit not like I used to. But I enjoy painting sketching playing the piano and making quilts. My husband is a blooming marvel does everything but I have to be careful not to let him as it makes me lazy. He doesn’t understand you can kill with kindness bless him.

  • Hi

lovely to hear what an inspiration you are - do you mind me asking what type of cancer you had.  I have invasive lobular cancer found through routine mammogram and had lumpectomy.  I have had to have re excision and am anticipating chemotherapy and possibly radiotherapy.  Not looking forward to losing hair as it has always been my identity.

  • Hi nice to hear from you and so sorry you have to go through the cancer journey, but lots of help available and the drugs are so good nowadays.
losing your hair is the worst thing I hated it, my daughter said just get it all shaved off easier said then done. But we went to the hairdresser and had it shaved of and we picked out a wig we were laughing about how awful I looked, but in the great scheme of things losing your hair is a very small thing. I felt like everyone knew I had cancer with my bald head I gave up wearing the wigs.
Hair really does grow back thicker and mine was less grey it’s not the end of the world but it does feel like it when you go through it.
Good luck with everything buy a nice hat xxx
