New to the big C

Hi everyone ️

New to all this after being diagnosed with breast cancer at the beginning of October 2023 after a routine mammogram at the age of 62.

Everything went reasonably quickly after being told I had 2 grade 2 invasive ductal carcinomas. On the 6th December I had a lumpectomy to remove them, along with a senitel node biopsy which was negative.

When I went back for the results on the 8th Jan I was told that when they went into my breast they found another significant tumour and that my breast was unstable.

It was decided that I would now have to have a full mastectomy with an expander implant, which I have just had done this Monday .

My question is as the lymph node was all clear does this mean I will not need to have any chemo? just maybe radiotherapy or is that the mastectomy would have just taken the cancer away.

If any of you that have been through the same with the same histology be kind enough to share their experiences of their next steps if any?

Many Thanks

  • Sorry to hear of your diagnosis but pleased your surgery is now over. I am just starting this awful journey, having been diagnosed with two invasive ductal carcinomas  one I'd grade 2, the other is 3. Mri showed area between lumps also has cancer cells. Have a ct scan on Monday, to see if it has spread. The waiting for this result will be difficult. I'm also HER2 positive, so need to have my chemo first, then mastectomy in a few months. Wish you well on the next step of your journey. Xx

  • The waiting I think is the absolute worst thing, especially at night when your on your own over thinking everything.

I turned extremely anxious and my GP  prescribed me 2mg of Diazepam which has really helped. I don't take them everyday only when I have the over whelming feeling of helplessness....have you tried them?

Try and keep your mind occupied over the weekend, easier said than done I know. Keep me posted, I'm seeing the surgeon on Monday also to have one if my drains taken out.

Did you say someone replied to my question as I can't find it?

    Keep your chin up

    Sandra

  • Thanks for your response. I haven't spoken to gp since diagnosed, I'm sure I will moving forward. At the moment I have been taking nytol if particularly stressed, just so I can get some sleep. Will have to check with oncologist, if these are OK to take. Haven't seen a response to your question, but hopefully someone will respond soon. Wish you well in your recovery. Xx
