second biopsy

Nearly 3 weeks ago my wife (51, first mammogram) was called back after a mammogram as microcalcifications had been spotted. She had the typical tests - enhanced mammogram, ultrasound and a biopsy. We were due to get the results this Friday, but the nurse has just called to say they need another biopsy. Apparently the doctors at the MDT meeting haven't seen anything 'overly suspicious' but they want to be '110% sure' so they want another biopsy. So I guess this sounds positive, but I still have that horrible 'back of the mind' dread. What could 'overly suspicious' mean anyway? Does it mean there's something there but they're not sure??? Just wondering if anyone else has been in in a similar position before. Will a second biopsy come back any quicker? The waiting is torture.

  • Hi My_wife_means_the_world_to_me,

This all sounds pretty reassuring. It sounds as if the microcalcifications were causing concern, after the first mammogram, which is why your wife was recalled. The fact that they haven't found anything is a positive. Sometimes microcalcifications can join to become clusters and at this stage they can become cancerous. I am not a doctor, but it sounds as if your wife's care team want to make absolutely certain by doing another biopsy. that there is no cancer present. It is also reassuring that they are being so thorough.

I hope that your wife gets the second biopsy soon and that she won't have too long to wait for the results. Unfortunately, they usually take about the same length of time to be returned.

Here's hoping that this still finds no cancer.

Please keep in touch and let us know how she gets on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
