Awaiting MRI for possible Prostate Cancer

Hi.

First time on this or any forum.

Have been going out of my mind with worry these past few weeks since an initial psa blood test came back with a reading of 8.

Recent follow up blood test showed slight increase and now been fast tracked for an MRI.

Done the worst thing possible and investigated further on Dr Google!!

With my symptoms I can only hope it may just be BPH but knowing how my brain is wired I will always expect the worst.

Anybody else out there had similar psa blood test results then to be told it was benign and not cancer.

Any replies would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks.

  • Hello Lej

I'm sorry to hear that a recent PSA result came back as elevated and that you're now waiting for some further investigations. Understandably, you're feeling anxious.

We know that many people turn to the internet for information whilst they're waiting for a diagnosis and unfortunately, as you've discovered already, what most often happens is that people don't find answers but are left feeling even more worried. Please try to avoid looking for answers online if you can.

There are many reasons why a PSA result may be raised and a PSA test itself isn't always accurate regarding a cancer diagnosis which is one of the reasons why there is currently no screening programme for prostate cancer in the UK.

Hopefully, you won't have to wait too long for the MRI and the results will bring you some reassurance. In the meantime, if you'd like to talk things through with one of our nurses I'm sure they would be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can. they're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Keep in touch Lej and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • Are you Afro/Caribbean decent. That group is at higher risk of Prostate Cancer than anyone.

Take it one step at a time.

But not to alarm you continue doing your research and treatment options for both BPH and prostate Cancer.
