Upcoming Hysterectomy at 70

Hi everyone, I have been very worried for several months now after having a post menopausal bleed last summer. I went to my GP who arranged several tests and after a vaginal ultrasound was told I needed a hysteroscopy. I had that under GA on 27/10 and had a large polyp removed.

i have been waiting since then for the biopsy results and yesterday was told that I have pre cancerous cells which have a 20-30% chance of turning into cancer and a 20-30% chance that cancer is already present that they have missed.

i have been told I need a complete hysterectomy which has really shocked me and I am scared that because I am 70 it will carry a lot of risks. I also have very high BP and yesterday at the hospital it was 207/110 so ok have to see my GP to start medication to bring it down.

i just wondered if anyone had a similar experience who might be able to offer some insight.

Many thanks

  • Hi Jennifafa .

I'm a bit younger than you at 58, but i had a full abdominal  hysterectomy in September, due to ovarian fibrothecoms. Thankfully every thing was benign. However i also had very high blood pressure at my pre op  and i  also had to be prescribed medication.  I have recovered well although im still taking blood pressure tablets but am hoping that lifestyle changes and weight loss will help the condition and im hoping now im recovered from the operation i can start to do more exercise.

My Mum had a  hysterectomy when she was 68 due to Endometrial cancer.   I'm taking her on a Caribbean Cruise in March and she will celebrate her 81st birthday on board - we should have gone last year for her 80th but had to delay due to the tests i was having and then my operation.  So she was of a similar age to you and has made a full recovery.

Hope that has given you some insight and helped.

    Good luck

    Karen
