Post surgery blues

I was diagnosed with endometrial cancer early stage one. Had a full hysterectomy and been told I don't need any further treatment.

Is it usual to feel sad, emotional after a positive outcome. I thought I would feel elated and run at life but quite the opposite.

Should I go to my GP? Or book myself a counsellor? I received my results in November.

Thank you

  • Hello NewyearNewlife,

It sounds like you are still recovering from everything you went through last year but as your username points out, this is now a New Year and a new life awaits you, one where you can put all this behind you. It sounds like they caught the endometrial cancer early if it was stage 1 and it is excellent news that the only treatment you needed was the hysterectomy. You must be feeling relieved but it's very common to feel sad and emotional after a positive outcome. It might take a little while for things to get back to normal, to re-adjust to life as it was prior to your diagnosis as you've been through a lot recently and even the physical recovery after surgery can take its toll and affect you emotionally. You received your results in November so it's only been a couple of months - give yourself the time you need to heal and recover fully.

Many members of our forum will be able to relate to the feelings you describe. Perhaps it isn't a bad idea to talk to your GP about it and ask whether you should go and see a counsellor or if it will just take a bit of time and it is to be expected after everything you've been through recently.

The start of a new year can often be a time when we reflect upon the year that has just gone by so it may be you are a little bit in a meditative mood about everything you've been through and hopefully with time, gradually and at your own pace, you can put all this behind you.

    Best wishes,
