Food

Hello,

I've been caring full time for my Mum. After my partner passed Sept 2023. Mum has Dementia, Bladder Cancer and Gastric Cancer. She's 89. For the last 3 weeks. After a meal. She's been getting terrible wind that she has trouble breaking. I rub and tap her back. She's also been feeling nauseous. Doctor did give her something for that. But she had very bad tremors as a side effect of the tablets so they were stopped. I'm trying to think of food that I can give her which is "Lite". With her Dementia she has been wanting baked potato everyday for the last week's. And I think it's a bit to heavy on her Stomach. Some suggestions would be appreciated. Thank You.

  • Hello White Dove,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

First of all, let me say how sorry I am to hear of your partner's passing in September.

It sounds as if you haven't had the best of years, and now you're trying to care for your Mum. Have you had a visit from a Dietician? It sounds as if you should be getting one, so do please ask your Mum's GP, or care team about this. It is always difficult to find meals that are easily digestible and won't cause wind. Have you tried well ground mince & mash,  home made soups, eggs in various guises or yogurts? It can sometimes be difficult to get people with cancer to eat, so I'm glad to hear that she wants a baked potato every day. I agree that this may be a bit too heavy for her and hope that the Dietician can make some more suitable suggestions.

Did her doctor try any other medication, when she had the allergic reaction? There are other medications that could be prescribed to help her out.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
