Can anyone relate?

Hello, I’ve recently just completed chemotherapy, radiotherapy and brachytherapy for cervical cancer. Next week I’ll be 5 weeks since treatment finished and have had a few side effects but these have thankfully subsided. However I’ve developed anxiety which I suffered a little during treatment but post treatment it’s become problematic. I wake up in the morning full of panic, heart racing and have dread for the day ahead. I’ve been prescribed medication to help short term and I am starting counselling too. I just wonder if anyone else has had anything similar? Thank you in advance.

  • Hi Aggie,

I’m normally pretty level-headed and optimistic but I have definitely shared those anxieties.

It’s a bit like working in a war zone (done that too), it’s when you get back to normaility that your minds allows the PTSD to surface. I’ve been in remission for ages but the nagging “when will it come back?” fear has never really gone away.

If the therapy doesn’t help, the passage of time might do the trick. Give your mind time to adjust to the new post treatment reality.

    Best wishes
    Dave

  • Hi Dave,

Thank you very much for your reply, it’s very much appreciated. I couldn’t have put it better myself and the word time has come up a lot in various conversations with others. Thank you again and wishing you a peaceful Christmas.
