Due to have partial nephrectomy for kidney tumours. Has anyone had this and can give me some advice?

Hi, I’ve just been diagnosed with tumours in my left kidney and they have found another in my right. I’ve been told they are 80 -90% certain they are cancerous and I’m waiting to see a consultant with the aim of partial nephrectomy to remove the ones on one of my kidneys and active surveillance on the other. Has anyone had this kind of surgery before who could afford some advice on what to expect. It’s come out the blue and a complete shock to the system.

Thanks.

  • Hi I had cancer in my right kidney diagnosed in 2019 I had a full nephrectomy in August 2019 I recovered well and was back at work albeit part time for a few weeks/months due to nature of my job about 8 weeks after. Unfortunately I was diagnosed last Oct with another type of cancer neuroendocrine tumour which was quite large in my pancreas I underwent a Whipple procedure in July this year and I am still recovering. Hope your procedure goes well for you.

  • Hi, thanks for the reply Sammie and I'm sorry to hear that you suffered a second type of cancer.  I hope you recovery is going well.

I just need to get over this first partial nephrectomy hurdle. Info re recovery is really useful, thanks. I know everyone is different and I was told approx 6 weeks but my job isn't always office based and can be physical, so I'm expecting a bit longer and my work could do with knowing so they can plan.

Did they undertake laparoscopic surgery or open surgery when you had your Op?

They are looking to do active surveillance on my right kidney tumour depending on the pathology results of the left. Cant say I'm keen on that, knowing it's there. Feels like a bit of a time bomb not knowing if it's going to go off.

    Take care

  • Mine was key hole 3 small cuts and then a larger one to retrieve the kidney as I opted to have the kidney removed entirely. It's the annual surveillance of the kidney cancer that caught the neuroendocrine  tumour and this years annual CT scan has now found something my lung just waiting on radiation scan results welcome surveillance they will check everything which is reassuring. You take care x

  • Thanks for your reply, its given me a different way to think about active surveillance to the way I have been Sammie.

Your right, it's something to be welcomed. I've been fearing it for what they might find but need to look positive if something is found as it means it will be caught early

I really hope everything goes OK with your scan results and if it is something then they have found it quickly.

    Take care and Merry Xmas.
