First Lump

Waiting for an appointment on 27th December.  Had Mammogram on 22nd March now have found lump. I am a nurse and googling everything. Have diagnosed myself as having stage 4. My mental health us shattered.

  • Hi Selizabeth,

A very warm welcome to our forum. This is always a particularly anxious wait and it exerts extreme mental pressure on us whilst we are waiting for results. This is one time when it doesn't help to have any medical training. The advice given here is not to consult "Dr Google", as s/he hones in on the more spectacular cases and this won't pertain to you, but will only serve to scare you further. I sincerely hope that you are wrong in your self-diagnosis. What a pity that you have to go over Christmas before you'll get your results. Please remember that we are always here for you in the meanwhile and let us know how you get on at your appointment.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you. I am not sleeping much either. I am turning 56 soon and Lost an older sister to bowel cancer at 55. I always had in my mind that something similar may happen to me.

  • Hi Selizabeth,

It can be hard to sleep, when you are so worried. Most of us tend to fear the worst at this stage. I am so sorry to hear about your sister and can understand your concern. I lost my Mum to secondary breast cancer and was convinced that I would go the same way. I had 2 bouts, but that was 14 years ago now and I still lead a busy and fulfilling life. There was just no comparison between the diagnosis, treatment and aftercare which we both experienced - they have all come a long way in recent years.

Thinking of you as you wait and I'll be around the forum throughout the holidays, so please feel free to chat if you need to.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Selizabeth I hope that you are o.k and that your appointment went well.

I am a nurse too and have been down many google rabbit holes. Try not to do that to yourself.

I am new here only been on a couple of weeks.

    Kind Regards

  • Unfortunately they found to small lumps that are about 4 cm apart. Have had biopsies and am waiting on my results. They said if proven to malignant, I will need a mastectomy.  Hoping results go well.

  • Hi Selizabeth,

I'm sorry to hear that they found 2 small lumps, at your appointment. As I'm sure you already know, not all lumps are cancerous. Many turn out to be benign cysts, fibroadenoma or due to hormonal changes. It is a fact that only 20% of those referred to the breast clinic get a cancer diagnosis, so here's hoping that you are one of the lucky ones. Have you any idea when your biopsy results are due back?

If it's of any consolation, I have had a lumpectomy and then a double mastectomy, within a year of each other and, I had fewer problems after the mastectomies than I did after the lumpectomy. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that you get favourable results.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. Remember that we are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
