FIT test of over 200, colonoscopy next week

I’m F36.

I’ve had digestive issues for many years. Over the past couple of years, I’ve experienced typical IBS symptoms (bloating, diarrhoea, constipation.

Just over a year ago, I passed blood. It was ‘fresh’ but there was a lot. I went to see the doctor and had blood tests and provided samples. I was advised that my FIT test score was 27. I was told it was IBS and to try over the counter meds.

I had a repeat incident around 5 months ago. Same tests. Scored 30 on this test and my doctor said she’s not concerned until it reaches at least 80.

Four weeks ago, I started passing a lot of blood with bowel movements. Probably close to a couple of shot glasses worth. This time it didn’t stop. Back to the doctors who were very relaxed until I showed them a photo.

I was given another FIT and the score was recorded as >200. My doctor called, asked me to attend for blood tests and put me on the 2 week bowel cancer pathway.

I’ve been using suppositories and the bleeding has significantly reduced but my doctor believes the blood is coming from further up.

I have a colonoscopy next week and keep flipping between ignoring it and becoming very panicked. Has anyone else experienced this?

  • Welcome to the forum SRH13 although I'm sorry to hear what you've been dealing with and for the worry this is understandably causing.

Many members of our community have had similar FIT scores and symptoms so you are not alone, and hopefully it won't be long until some of them stop by to share their experiences and advice.

I'm not sure from your post if you have had a colonoscopy before, but if you haven't and would like to find out more, do be sure to take a look at this page on our website.

If you have any further questions, our team of cancer nurses are available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

We're thinking of you SRH13 and wishing you all the best for next week.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi, this sounds very much like my journey - though I had a high FIT result from the start, docs kept giving the impression of not really caring, right up until they were suddenly super worried and put me on the 2-week pathway.  I'm even F38, so kinda similar!

Please try not to panic at this stage, it could be a number of things, as I've sure you've been told already, e.g. an IBD, or non-cancerous tumour.  The important thing is you stay on their radar and don't let them dismiss you.  My colonoscopy and endoscopy showed nothing so the hospital kept discharging me back to my GP, who referred me back.  It was only when I finally got a CT that masses were found.

So keep on top of everything, check your blood tests and ask them to explain everything to you, question why they are not taking action on certain things, demand further investigation.  Are you registered on Patients Know Best?  That records tests as they come in, so I was able to ask my doctor detailed queries.

It also hugely helped  me to keep a list on my phone of questions - I would wake up at 3am with my brain buzzing with stress and 'what ifs', so I write down the questions as they came to keep, and was able to free my mind a bit.

Hoping for the best for you.

  • Hi Jen, thank you very much for taking the time to reply to me.

It does sound very similar! I think it’s their sudden panic that has panicked me.

I have the colonoscopy tomorrow, so hopefully all will be well or I’ll know what it is I’m dealing with.

I hope that your journey is going well.

  • Hi just been looking through threads I hope all went well what were the results?

  • Hello! All went well thank you. The colonoscopy showed diverticular disease, so a relatively positive outcome.
