Enlarged Tonsil and lymph node (UTE)

Hello Everyone,

At the start of the year around March time I was feeling really unwell and feverish. I went to the doctors for them to say I had tonsilitis and was given antibiotics. 6 weeks later and 3 more lots of antibiotics I had never fully felt like my energetic, proactive self again. I had started to notice my right tonsil has not gone down and a little bit of sweeling in my neck. So with this I went to urgent care mainly for a different opinion and they once again said it was just a viral infection and it will pass.

At this point I just moved on even though I never felt 100% myself. 7 months later, my tonsil had gotten slightly larger and the neck node had felt more harder but not a lot bigger, with a persistent sore throat and the feeling of something in my mouth almost like hair that wasn't there (Not seen anyone talk about this before.) so I went back to the GP, the doctor had one look and she referred me for 2ww ENT. I seen the ENT on 11th November and he explained that the tonsil and nodes are enlarged but do not look alarming after examination.

I was given an option of Tonsillectomy and MRI or just MRI and see where we are at that stage. I told the doctor I would go with his recommendation of Tonsillectomy and MRI. I have already had a call for an MRI on Saturday 18th which surprised me (SO QUICK).

I just wanted to share my experience and get your thoughts and experiences:)

  • I had the same thing I had white spots and englarged tonsils for 4 months straight would go to gp who would prescribe me antibiotics which would work initially but week later or so would come back I was refered to ent under cancer pathway and saw a consultant who told me that the antibiotic they were givin me more or less was the same strength so he presided me stronger anti biotics and steriod tablets aswell like yours one side was more enlarged than the other and he sent me for mri. Anyways tablets worked mri came clean and it’s been 5months and Iv Been clear from it. Turned out I had strep throat that wasn’t treated properly. Consultant didn’t know this as my Swab test came back after my initial consultation. Also while I was down this route I did read about getting tonsils removed and most was saying it’s more painful as an adult longer recovery.

  • Hi, I don't have any white spots or anything just a large tonsil and a neck lump that's fairly small. Hope your doing well now !

  • How did you get on similar eighth tonsil still big from flu 4 weeks ago. Seeing a ent on Monday. Very worried x
