Scared of breast cancer

For nearly 3 weeks now my boobs have been so swollen, tender, heavy and have constant pain and a burning sensation. I went to the doctors last Friday and she examined me and asked if breast cancer runs in my family. I explained I had lost my mum (45) 5 years ago due to breast cancer so she referred me to a breast surgery clinic and has put in an urgent referral for a mammogram. The hospital rang me Friday night and said a consultant will either send me a letter or ring me within the next 2 weeks with an appointment. The doctors also put me on naproxen and said this will help if it’s nothing bad and will reduce the pain and swelling but nothing is helping me and I’m worried. I’m only 30.

  • Hi Tanya,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am sorry to hear about your symptoms and understand the worry that this is causing you. Waiting to be seen at the breast clinic is always a stressful time, but you have done the right thing by pursuing this. Not everyone who attends the breast clinic will get a cancer diagnosis. In fact only 20% of those who attend do. Unfortunately, there is nothing I can say which will ease this wait for you - it's something that we all have to go through. Try to keep busy, whether with work or a hobby. This helps to take your mind off things.

I sincerely hope that nothing untoward is found.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. WE are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    JOlamine xx
