Hi Emma,

I understand how worrying this is for you. I did not have DCIS, but Mucinous cancer, with some fibrocytic changes noted in the background. I had a lumpectomy in 2010 and took Tamoxifen, but discovered a lump in my other breast almost six months later. My surgeon was pretty sure that this was cancerous, but fortunately a biopsy proved that it was benign. Almost a year to the day of my first surgery, I discovered a another lump in my original breast, but this time I wasn't so lucky. I had a second primary cancer of the same type and stage. In 2011, I had a double mastectomy, as my surgeon felt that the lump in my other breast was pre-cancerous. I followed treatment with Letrozole for 6½ years. 

I guess that my experience just goes to show that it can go either way. That was all nearly 14 years ago now and I still lead a busy and fulfilling life. You have already been through a lot with your breast surgery and hysterectomy and I sincerely hope that nothing untoward is found.

Hi Emma,

in 2016 I was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer.  Following that surgery I had to have a 2nd surgery as the margins were not clear as there was an area dcis. This was successfully removed and I then had radiotherapy and Tamoxifen for 5 years.  Fast forward to this summer and a routine mammogram detected an area of high grade dcis in the same breast.  2 weeks ago I had a single mastectomy with immediate diep flap reconstruction.I am very grateful it was found and that it wasn’t yet invasive and fingers crossed my risk of further bc in that breast is reduced,

HI Emma,

I am so sorry to hear this. There are in fact 3 grades of DCIS - low, intermediate and high. Have you discussed any further treatment following surgery? I am not surprised that you are having difficulty taking this all in. I actually found my double mastectomy easier to deal with than my lumpectomy - here's hoping that you will too. Do you know what other tests you're to have and are you going to have reconstruction?

Hi Jolamine, they are doing a full body bone scan, genetic testing and something else that I cant remember , I will go back to clinic in 2 weeks , they said the would discuss reconstruction etc. Its a lot to take in and I think I just *** down when they the Consultant said its back. Im thinking over the coming weeks I need to get myself as mentally and physically strong as I can to face the coming months. Thank you so much for responding, you have been so lovely x

Hgh grade means it is fast growing, but dcis is considered stage 0 because it is still contained within the ducts.  If it becomes invasive and do begins growing outside the ducts then it is stage 1, 2 …. depending on size, lymph node involvement etc.   Some dcis never becomes invasive.  I got my results yesterday and they found an area of triple negative invasive cancer which doesn’t respond to hormone therapy so it looks like I’ll be needing chemo next ️ ️ ️:(
