Appendix cancer

My daughter died two days before Christmas 2022, She was being treated for suspected ovarian cancer but when she had an operation to remove an ovarian cyst it was discovered that cancer had spread into the abdomen and had originated in the appendix. The cancer was by this stage too advanced to be treated. I have been reading the thread concerning Tommy01. It seems to me that this form of cancer is very difficult to diagnose unless the patient develops appendicitis as Tommy did and has the appendix removed before there is any spread. I would like to know if there is any research going on into appendix cancer? I understand that it is quite rare.

  • So sorry to here about your daughter. I was very lucky that I had an appendicitis, had it not been for that the cancer would have spread and would have probably been untreatable. I had Goblet Cell Adenocarcinoma which is extremely rare, effecting only 1 in 2 million, because it is so rare very little research has been done. Unfortunately research funding is not finite so it seems it is targeted towards the more common cancers.

  • I was glad to see that you have recovered and are well now. I don’t know what can be done about this type of cancer as it is very rare and so difficult to diagnose. I was pleased to see that Cancer Research are going to do some research into some less common cancers.
