I have had EC and Paclitaxil and am due to have a mastectomy next week. I'm not looking forward to the op. Glad it's day surgery but not sure how I'm going to cope with no reconstruction, pain and drains.
I had a mastectomy 18 months ago without reconstruction so am flat on one side. It’s normal to feel nervous but I was surprised to be in very little pain. I didn’t even have drains put in. Recovery is usually very swift after a simple mastectomy. The first week you will be a bit uncomfortable but my main issues were the surgical stockings! It’s really important to do your exercises to keep everything moving and I was told to massage my scar rigorously to break down scar tissue (only do this with the go ahead of your nurse). It really helped and I now have a fine white scar and a smooth flat surface. It all looks okay really.
