Oesophageal cancer inoperable on palliative care

Hi I’m new to this forum. My husband who is 69 was diagnosed with a 2cm tumour in his oesophagus in March of 2020. His oncologist hoped to eradicate it with a course of five weeks intensive daily radiotherapy and weekly chemotherapy. This slowed the growth but didn’t eradicate it. Three years on he’s still battling, another round of different chemo and combined Herceptin last year didn’t help and his second oncologist said he has Her2negative cancer which doesn’t respond well to chemo. He’s carrying on with three weekly Herceptin as his oncologist feels it’s stopping any spread and we’re lucky in that respect. His tumour has grown though and he’s had four stents fitted in his oesophagus to help him eat and drink. Each one was overgrown at the top or bottom by the tumour and number three was ingrown. We don’t know if another stent is possible and our oncologist can’t say although they would try. He’s doing well but suffers draining tiredness and his stomach gets upset easily. He suffers bouts of diahorrea and often feels sick, he has other health and mobility issues. Anyone else out there can offer any help or advice. Thank you

  • Hello Colby64,

I am so sorry to hear your husband's tumour has grown and that the chemotherapy treatment and combined Herceptin last year didn't help. Poor him battling oesophageal cancer all these years and having to deal with these health and mobility issues. Make sure you mention all these symptoms to his oncologist in case they have helpful suggestions for him. I am glad he is doing well despite everything he is going through and I hope that you will hear from other members of our community who have been affected by oesophageal cancer and that they will share their story with you.

Our cancer nurses are also available on this free number 0808 800 4040 if there is anything you would like to talk through with them. Their helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm so don't hesitate to give them a call if you feel you need advice at any point.

    Best wishes,
