Skin biopsy

I had a skin biopsy on a raised tender lump on my back I went to get my results a few days ago and my consultant told me that I have the pathologists puzzled as it has rare structures. The mole on top of the lump has come back benign but the lump underneath hasn’t had a diagnosis made apparently this is rare. I am now going out of my mind with worry as my consultant won’t commit to what it could be said it could be a melanoma or could still be benign. Has this happened to anyone else and does this sound like it’s more likely bad news.

  • Sometimes pathology have problems diagnosing skin tissue. What is the consultant's plan?

  • Spoke to my a nurse about my worries and she said as my case is so rare it has now been sent to a top pathologist in countries  at guys hospital and he will be able to give a definitive answer but could take up to 10 days then will have to go in for surgery

  • This isn't rare but it doesn't happen often. I know someone whose sample was sent to 3 different hospitals, eventually going to a top histologist in Amsterdam! It's upsetting because you wait long enough to get the results anyway but it's good that they are ensuring they have the correct diagnosis. In the very rare event they still can't agree on a diagnosis, they usually treat the lesion as though it was melanoma to be on the safe side. That is probably why you have been told you will need further surgery - a wide local excision which is done in all melanoma cases. Good luck, I hope you aren't waiting too long and I hope they can make a definitive diagnosis. Please let us know how you get on,

Angie (stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)

  • Just wanted to give an up date what has been happening . After 7 weeks of waiting for my biopsy results. It has been very stressful as several pathologists have looked at my biopsy and special chemical stains needed plus sent to Australia to melanoma centre  where they were still unsure.  My consultant decided to do a WLE on my back as he said would give us some breathing space until we knew what we were dealing with. I’m  extremely pleased to say had my results this morning and it was benign, it has been a very stressful time but I wanted to do an update as I was really convinced in the end it would be melanoma apparently it did a good job of mimicking it and they needed to run these tests to be absolutely sure before I had my diagnosis so that I would get the right treatment. I want to thank you for your reply to me Angie as it did help me try and stay calm and rational which wasn’t always easy and if anyone else is going through something similar not to lose hope as it’s not always the worst case scenario. I wish you well Angie and your advice is extremely reassuring even when we don’t have answers.

  • Thank you so much for updating us Vicky - it really helps others going through the same worries. I'm so pleased it was benign, you can now breathe again. Also, thank you for your kind words. Take care xx
