JAK2-negative

Hi everyone, hopefully someone can help. I have just been diagnosed with JAK2-negative PV (polycythaemia vera) which I have just found out is a rare type of blood Cancer. I got  the diagnosis on Thursday from the Haematologist who rang me at home and to be honest I had very little idea of what he was talking about I had to google most of it. I am confused at the JAK2-negative description as I thought if something was negative it wasn't cancer but it seems that this is. I haven't heard anything from my Doctor although I tried to make an urgent appointment as I want to know what's going on and the best I could get is 4th October. I am very anxious, I know nothing about what is going to happen next or treatment. Has anyone been through this, do you know anything about this type of Cancer? any help would be appreciated.

  • Hi Kitty001,

Welcome to Cancer Chat and I'm sorry to hear about you diagnosis. JAK2 is a gene makes a particular protein, so the negative may relate to a change or a fault in that gene. There is a useful section on polycythaemia vera here, which you can refer to whenever you wish. When youre worried, it can be tempting to look for answers through Google, but this can end up causing confusion and increasing anxiety. We also have a team of cancer nurses available on the freephone 0808 800 4040, if you'd like to speak to someone. Lines are open 9 to 5 Monday to Friday.

It's important that you feel informed and that your questions are addressed by your doctor. It might help to write down those questions or concerns and take them with you to your next appointment.

I hope this helps and the forum is here for you if need it.
