Operation Sentinel Lymph Gland

I have had an operation for Melanoma on my thigh and consequently had a sentinel lymph node operation. This was done 17 days ago and I go to hospital in 3 days to have the stitches removed. I’m confused as there are 2 scars in my groin and 1 around the original melanoma. Is it normal for the surgeon to go into 2 places and why? Results are not back yet and now am very anxious.

  • Hi LuccaJen,

Avery warm welcome to our forum.

I am not a doctor, but I suspect that one area was for the melanoma and one for the lymph node.

We all tend to be very anxious when waiting for results. Fortunately, you don't have much longer to wait to get the stitches out. I would expect your results to be back by Tuesday. If they're not, make sure to ask how long you may have to wait. I sincerely hope that all has gone well and that you get good news.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you Jolamine . I have 2 scars in the groin area and the big one on my thigh. So 3 places. I scar in my groin is bulging and I’m still bruised in that area . Thanks for your support. It’s appreciated.

  • Hi,

It may be that two nodes lit up but they weren't close enough to remove with one excision so they had to do two. The bulging may be the lymph collecting to form a seroma. Keep an eye on it and contact your specialist nurse if it doesn't improve. Good luck with your results,

  • Hi Lucca Jen

I am just guessing but as you have 2 scars in the groin area from where the node was removed that 1 was an incision to find the node and the other scar was the incision to remove it.

I would like to think the procedure was explained to you prior to the biopsy, if you are anything like me you may have not heard this clearly.

It is understandable for you to feel very anxious at this time, my biopsy results took 3 weeks.

    Stay positive. x

  • Hi LuccaJen,

In that case, I expect that either AngieT's or Hayleyrm2's explanation is right. Also, take AngieT's advice and contact your specialist nurse if the "bulging" gets any bigger.

I hope that you get your results on Tuesday.

    Keep in touch.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you . I will let you know how it goes with the stitches removal! Am desperate for a shower !
