Lump found on mammogram

I’m 53 and had my second mammogram about 3 weeks ago, last Saturday I got a letter saying I needed to go for more tests. I went on Wednesday and they told me there was changes on my right breast that wasn’t there on my 1st mammogram so I had another more intense mammogram and ultrasound guided biopsy. The dr doing the test said I had a 1cm lump ( which couldn’t be felt) she then told me I would get an appointment the following week for my results as they will be discussing my case in the MDT meeting a few days later. The doctor also said I would see the consultant who will discuss my treatment plan and surgery. My husband came with me and although at no point did they say we think this is cancer we both got exactly the same feeling that that’s what they suspect just from the way she was talking. There was also no mention that it was just a cyst.
the waiting is horrible, and I do know that I have been very lucky and seen very quickly but it’s horrible knowing they have got my results and discussed it yesterday and I’ have no idea what they are.

  • Hi there , I’m so sorry you’re in this awful waiting game! I would advise just keeping busy . Go walking in the park , on a beach , go shopping ….. anything to keep you busy . I hope that you have good news next week . X

  • Hi, im in a similar situation as you. On a recall i had more 3d mammograms, ultrasound and biopsy. I was referred to hospital then from the clinic and told even if biopsy results negative i would still need to be seen. Just got appointment for 4September. Lump only 4mm and cannot be felt. Only 5 days since bioosy but im in a mess trying to keep calm. Not told anyone yet as my son has cancer . Anyone offer any advice or been in the same situation getting a referral on the day of the biopsy before any results? Thanks

  • Hi the wait is horrible and your wait is so long , the 4th September  seems so far away, my original appointment for the results was the 23rd August and they gave me that appointment  at  the time I had all the tests done, we have private medical insurance so I’ve  managed to get an appointment for Tuesday the 15th August.

  • Hi Askinforafriend,

A very warm welcome to our forum,

I am sorry to hear that you are in this unenviable position, but glad to hear that you don't have too long to wait for the results. This is always an anxious time, especially when you got the vibes you got at your last appointment. The staff at these clinics don't tend to gloss over things, but even they cannot be sure until they see the results of your biopsy. I have been told that my lump was "suspicious" at all three visits with new lumps. Unfortunately, they were right about 2, but biopsy proved them wrong about the other. There are different types of breast cancer and some are more aggressive than others.

I have been fortunate that, despite having 2 bouts, I am still here 14 years on and I still lead a busy and fulfilling life. Cancer treatments have advanced tremendously in recent years. I lost my mum to secondary breast cancer, before I was diagnosed and was naturally terrified that I'd go down the same road. As it turned out, there was just no comparison between the diagnosis, treatment and after care, which we both experienced.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Well I got my results on Tuesday and it is a grade 1 invasive breast cancer. Still waiting on the receptor results which I should get next week. The consultant seems to think it will most probably be eastrogen receptor positive so I need to stop HRT immediately, I’ll probably just need a lumpectomy and radiotherapy and they need to check if it’s spread into any lymph nodes by doing a sentinel node biopsy. Even though I was expecting bit to be cancer it’s still felt like I’d been hit by a bus when they say those words to you”you have cancer”
