Awaiting breast referral results - how do others cope?

Hi I’m nearly 43, I found a lump a few months back but only attended the doctors a few weeks ago as I was unsure what it was. They referred me straight away and I got an appointment with a surgeon at breast clinic. He did an ultrasound and said he was concerned about my lump and referred me to have mammogram. Had my mammogram yesterday, the doc said it looks suspiciously like cancer. I had 6 core biopsies done on 2 areas and markers put in. I need to wait a week for my results. I know in my heart what is coming, I seen the lump on the mammogram and it’s a spikey thing about 2 and half centimetres. The wait is torture. Sorry for ranting but wondering how others coped in this situation xx

  • Hi Missrooboo,

I am so sorry to hear this. Waiting for results is always a worrying time, but I'm glad to hear that you don't have too long to wait. The best thing to do is to find things to do, that distract you from the thought of cancer and to keep as busy as you can - not easy, I know!

I was told at my first visit that it looked like cancer and it was. Six months later, I was told the same again and it wasn't. A further six months on and I got a second primary diagnosis. I had a lumpectomy first time around and a double mastectomy the second time. That was 14 years ago now and I still lead a busy and fulfilling life. As LCR has already said, "it will be a rollercoaster, with good days and bad, but we are always here for you. You will find it helpful to write down a list of any questions you may have, prior to your appointment.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Many thanks, I’m in for a lumpectomy on 4th September so I’ve not too long to wait xx

  • Hi Missrooboo,

I am glad to hear that all is happening fairly quickly - the sooner you start, the sooner you can put all of this behind you. Have you been told what type and stage your cancer is?

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • No they said it’s grade 2 but they can’t stage it until it’s removed. It’s an invasive one that’s come from my milk ducts. They said it’s hormonal xx

  • Hi Missrooboo,

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it's still a fairly low grade.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
