MRI scan for prostate cancer

I feel slightly embarrassed even asking this but I am very claustrophobic and I am very anxious about being enclosed in the MRI ‘tube’. Can somebody please advise if my head would be poking out of the machine, thereby allaying all fears. How long does the scan last, typically?

Also, are CT scans ever performed rather than MRI ones for this investigation?

Thank you for any advice.

  • If you are having an abdominal MRI scan you should go in feet first.  I also get very claustrophobic, a duvet over my head in bed can cause panic.  I was ok with the MRI scan for the most part, I found it really helpful to tilt my head back so I could see into the room, not hugely comfortable but that is what worked for me.  I am pretty sure I wouldn't be able to cope with a head first scan.
