Unsure what's happening - cysts found in breast but they're not sure if benign or malignant

I went for a mammogram on the Thursday and had a mammogram biopsy the following Friday for calcification in both breast but left one was more concerning. Received my call 10 days later to be told they found benign cysts but didn't get enough of the calcification to determine if benign or malignant. I have to go and have them repeated and can't understand why they could tell the cysts are benign. My heads in a spin

  • Hi Eun,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am so sorry to hear that you have been given such an unsatisfactory result. I am not a doctor, but I understand that most lesions are either cancerous or benign. However, some are borderline. If they want to carry out  more tests, it sounds as if this might be the case with yours. It sounds as if they didn't get a big enough sample of tissue at the time of your biopsy, so they cannot be certain of the result. You definitely shouldn't have been told that your results were benign, if they are still unsure.

Having said this, most cysts turn out to be benign, so here's hoping that this turns out to be the final result for you.

I know that this means another wait, which is always hard. Have you got a date to have them repeated yet?

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you for your reply I have had another biopsy and wide local excision go on the 20th for stitches out and find out the rest of treatment plan.

They sent me a letter explaining I had a 21x 21nn suspicious for DCIS which is oestrogen fed ER7 (early cancerous changes) just how its put in the letter. My heads been reeling.

I have sat and spoken with the hubby and my son who I am carer for, and we have had a read through cancer research information and made a United decision that if it is cancerous then I'd like to opt for mastectomy this way if it returns I can then have radiation therapy. I don't need them anymore too old for more children and I need to be looking forward and not wondering . It might sound strange to opt this route but my life as a carer for my family means alot and they would be up the creek without a paddle if things turned completely wrong and I wasn't around

  • Hi Eun,

Thank you for the update. It's not the news that either of us were hoping for, but it is doable.

I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer, also oestrogen fed. The first time I had a lumpectomy, but with the second bout, I had a double mastectomy. I was unable to have reconstruction, but manage well with an assortment of prostheses for different activities. That was all 14 years ago and I still lead a busy and fulfilling life. It is good that you have caught this early, as I did and you should have a similar outcome.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on on 20th.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
