Oesophagectomy - my experience

Just like to post my experiences if they can help anyone.

Had op Nov 20 (72 at time) FLOT pre op but due to complications nothing after. Had scan in Jan 23 and all clear.

No problems eating only with excess and too many gummy bears.

Took some time to regain my mojo and an fall asleep at drop of hat. Playing golf 3 times a week (no buggy)

I have no pain just occasional rib irritation (broke again after op , probably sneezing)

Sleep with full bed wedge under mattress and memory foam pillow when not at home. As long as I take immediate notice of the dreaded gurgle and get myself upright or onto my safe side (thats the left for me) I'm OK. Liquid gafiscon by bed if throat gets irritated/burnt. Back drinking lager as long as not too lively and bubbles cause cough.

Final note I may invest I  toilet roll manufacturer. Go through that many. Never miss a day!

  • Hello Foreverchanges,

Thank you for sharing your oesophagectomy experience. It's very nice of you to take the time to do this as I am sure it will be very useful to others who will be having the same procedure. I am glad you are not having problems eating though beware of these gummy bears!

It's completely normal that it took you some time to regain your mojo but I am pleased to hear you have no pain and well done for playing golf 3 times a week - I bet it's a very nice distraction. Thank you for sharing all the tips of what worked for you - it may be useful to others reading this who might experience similar issues after the oesophagectomy.

Wishing you a quick and full recovery!

    Best wishes,
