Breast pain

I am 62 and have had breast pain since February 23 I was finally gave a mammogram on May and they said nothing to see I have no lumps or any of the other signs that go with cancer but having this pain in my right breast more n more just wanting to know if anyone else has had anything similar thank you

  • Hello scotty61,

It's reassuring that your mammogram in May didn't flag anything suspicious but as your pain in your right breast is increasing and persisting, I think it would be a good idea to bring it up with your GP. If you'd like to talk to someone else about it, you can find out how to get a second opinion on this page.

I hope that you will hear from other members of this forum who have been through something similar before and that they will be along shortly to share their experience with you.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi scotty

im sorry to hear you are still in pain I know just how you feel. Last year in March 22, I had burning pain in my left breast and I noticed that my nipple on that side had gone inverted some way. My GP referred me to the breast clinic and I had a mammogram and thorough examination. Nothing of any concern showed other than very nodular cyst area, so I was sent on my merry way with a diagnosis of non cyclical pain and told to use some ibuprofen gel. Fast forward to June and the pain was constant so Gp referred me back to clinic. I was seen again in august 22 again lovely team examined me and gave me an ultrasound on breast where the pain was and which felt more lumpy than the rest. Again told all was well and discharged. In September I was called for routine Screening mammogram which was also clear. I am still in pain but my breast is now harder than the other so been referred back to clinic for a third time. I am worried sick and can’t cope with the pain any longer. Nothing helps with this now including the gel that worked before. My nipple is also red and very flat now so hoping to get seen again soon.
Have you been back to your GP?
    it’s such a worry isn’t it? x

  • Hi Pauline,

I am so sorry to hear of all your pain, but glad to hear that all of your tests have been clear so far. Did they tell you at the clinic, that it is unusual to have breast pain associated with breast cancer? I sincerely hope that your appointment comes through soon and that you can get some answers this time.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you so much Jolamine x I really appreciated your support last year to help me through the stormy period. I am so worried that things have not improved, rather they have deteriorated and I am broken with worry. I have tried to reassure myself about the clear tests so far but it hasn’t worked sadly.
I have a very supportive family but I’m worried that it is too much for them at the moment so tend to keep my worries to myself which doesn’t help my mental state. Hopefully my GP can pursue my appointment with the breast clinic tomorrow and maybe reassure me somewhat until I get there.
thanks so much again and I hope you are still keeping well x

  • thanks for your reply i have obtained a referral letter from my doctor albeit angry that i cannot obtain mri or ultra sound via nhs which i have paid into all my working life ,but aside that i paid to go to see a private breast doctor who also said they cannot find anything up other than chestwall  inflamation something called costacolitus and advised using evening primrose oil and ibruffon gel i am just about losing my mind i dont sleep or enloy my family time as i have not shared this with my family they say i have changed ,but dont want to worry any of them till i check all avenues my next step is a mri ,reading your story confirms to me they can get it wrong i know my body and something isnt right but sadly the doctors noadays dont want to know

  • Hi Pauline,

I am sorry that you have had to come back to us with the same problem and I know just how frustrating it can be when you don't seem to be getting anywhere. I am glad to hear that your family are very supportive, but can understand why you don't want to place this at their door, until you have a full diagnosis. Do you mean Costachondritis? This can  last for up to a year, or even longer in some cases and then just disappears. You need to rest as much as you can and don't lift anything heavy. Have you tried any of the alternative therapies for this? I wouldn't take anything without consulting your GP first, but preparations like Turmeric, Ginger, Arnica, Chamomile, Devil's Claw, Ginseng Root & Glucosamine are all recommended for this condition. My surgeon advised me to take Star Flower when I was first diagnosed.

I am still keeping well thank you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thanks Jolamine. It was scotty61 who mentioned the costchondritis but sure she will see your reply too x I’ll keep you updated on how things go and thanks for being here x

  • Hi Pauline,

That's what happens when I try to answer a few posts quickly before dinner - my apologies.

    Kind regards,
