Mamograms

Hi there, i am a 74 year old lady called Heather. I had a lumpectomy several years ago and after being Cancer free for approx 6 years had a routine mammogramme and they found Cancer again. No lumps or any indic\tion anything was wrong. Within a week i was in hospital having a Mastectomy. Was told i would have a Mammogram every year due to myhealth condition with Cancer and several family members having breast canceer would have a mammogram once a year. I know we have had a Pandemic but was told when i had my mammogram at 70 it would be my last regardless of what the surgeon told me. They tell me if i find anything at all, lump etc they would give me one. That won't happen as not even the surgeon the morning of my op had to double check as lumps so deep rooted he could not feel anything there.?. I am worrying that there may be something there and i will not find it? Has anyone else had this problem. I do have a prothetic boob but much too big and have had it now for several years. Any advice whre i can buy one and how do i check for size. Been signed of and forgotten about by my local hospital. I am main carrer for my husband so this is very worrying. Thanks for listening. Take care all. Heather

  • Hi i can see a reply and says "view online" but when i click on it nothing comes up only the cance logo. New to this so am i doing something wrong. Thanks Heather

  • Thought I would reply , see if it works as I have a similar notification by email can't see what it is! Sorry your experiencing this difficulty.  Try going to GP & ask for an explanation, no more mammograms perhaps because total mastectomy nothing to examine. Does not mean a blood test might flag up a concern that may indicate need for further scans. Hope this helps. Keep positive.

  • Thanks so much for quick reply to my concerns. Have now checked with my G.P., they  said the same, if i find a lump in my other breast phone local screening centre for a Mammogram. Wonder why they were only concerned about my other breast until i was 70. I have a lot of breast cancer in my famiy. Oh well cannot do anything about it. Once again many, many thanks for your reply and thanks for taking the time. Good wishes to all Heather.

  • You are welcome  H. Hope you are less anxious now. Its good to chat, others can help a bit. Take care.

  • Hi Munchkin,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I had a lumpectomy 14 years ago. Within 6 months I found a large lump in my other breast, which my surgeon immediately thought was cancer. Fortunately, biopsy proved otherwise. However, almost a year after my first surgery, I found another lump in my original breast and I wasn't so lucky this time. I discussed surgery options with my surgeon and we decided that a double mastectomy would be the best choice, as he felt that the lump in my other breast was pre-cancerous. I was unable to have reconstruction, due to other, non-cancer related surgery, so I wear prostheses on both sides.

I had an annual review for 5 years post-surgery and was then discharged. A prosthesis does not last forever. Since then my prostheses are replaced every 2 years. Have you not had your prosthesis replaced? You can ask for a smaller sized one when this happens, so you shouldn't have to buy one yourself. Clinics tend to use your original breast size as a guide for your prosthesis. I felt that mine were too heavy at first and have got lighter ones over the years. I have also found foam breast forms in M & S, which are much lighter and are fairly inexpensive. I wear these for everyday and have sewn them into strapless dresses, swim suits, etc. They also machine wash well. Why not phone your local breast care clinic and ask about getting a new prosthesis?

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Awe, thanks you are a gem. Yes i had the 5 year check ups after my mastectomy (2013)and then signed of as you say.  Breast clinic gave me the prosthesis and sent me on my way. This was 9/10 years ago and never been seen by the nurses since then. Will call into my local hospital and ask to see one of the breast care nurses. Thanks so much for your reply it is so kind of you. Will let you know how i get on. Thanks again. Heather. Please all take care and keep safe.
