Dad 55 prostate cancer

Hi I don't really know where to start but I found myself on here this morning. I'm 29 year old with a 3 year old daughter and a few days ago we found out my dad got stage 4 prostate cancer. I'm broken  the hospital give him an estimated time line for 3-7 years depending on how he respons to treatment, but I'm lost the fact it was undetected for so long that it spread and was straight to stage 4 before  he even had a chance to fight it breaks me. Losing my dad is my greatest fear he always been the one person in the world I can rely on i don't know how to deal with the fact we will eventually lose him while I'm Still so young.

  • Hello Lostgirl29,

I am so sorry to hear about your dad. It must be really unsettling that he has been given an estimated 3-7 years but try not to dwell too much on numbers and the prognosis as it may well depend on how he responds to treatment and these estimates are not totally reliable. I hope that the treatment goes well. I can understand why you are feeling lost and upset that it was undetected for so long and that it has now spread. There is information on our website on metastatic prostate cancer and on treatment options for metastatic prostate cancer which may be of interest to you.

Hopefully the treatment will work well to extend your dad's life so try not to think of these numbers and estimates they have given you but to focus on enjoying the quality time you have together. Fingers crossed he will respond well to the treatment.

I will now let other forum members who have supported a loved one with advanced prostate cancer come and share their experiences with you.  It does help to talk to others who understand what you are going through at the moment. Our cancer nurses are also available on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm if there is anything you would like to ask them or talk through with them.

    Best wishes,
