Iodine and PSA levels

Over the past 25 years my PSA has always been high for my age but I have always decided on no further action apart from a couple of DREs.

I am currently 74 years old. In January 2020, a blood test showed my PSA as 6.22 ug/L. I had a meet with the Urologist who did a DRE (negative), talked to me about cancer, and suggested that if it went over 7.0 I should have a biopsy. In January this year 2023 I had a blood test which showed my PSA as 8.1. I received an urgent call from my GP who said I should have an MRI scan of my prostrate. I stalled and it was agreed that we would give in 3 months, see what the PSA level was and then reconsider the MRI scan. Meanwhile, my wife read on internet the importance of Iodine for prostrate health. One source of Iodine in food is Iodised salt, but we use Himalayan salt which contains no Iodine and I don't eat a lot of fish. In order to up my Iodine levels, I started using Lugols Iodine 7% solution, applying it daily, transdermally, by putting 2 drops on my forearm and rubbing it in. I then repeated the blood test on 21st April 2023 and my PSA had gone done to 6.2. I repeated the test but at a different clinic and the PSA showed as 6.4. As I am now within the normal PSA range for my age, the original GP was not available to discuss this with me, but I spoke to a couple of other GPS who have both said they have not heard of Iodine being efficacious in this way. Has anyone else used Iodine in relation to their prostate problems or high PSA levels?

  • Hello Malcx

I'm sorry to hear that there have been ongoing concerns about your PSA levels and what may be responsible for the increased levels you've seen over the past few years. It's understandable that you may have some questions.

I'm not aware of any members here who have mentioned iodine regarding lowering prostate levels but hopefully if there is anyone they will post to share their experience with you.

In the meantime you may want to give our nurses a call and chat things through with them. I'm sure they will be happy to try and answer any questions they can and give you some information and support. If you'd like to talk with them they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm (excluding bank holidays) on 0808 800 4040.

    Best wishes,
