Thyroid cancer survivor

Hi

I am new to this chat. I had Thyriod cancer nearly 20 years ago. It was the most scary time of my life, but also the most life affirming too.
I didn't get to talk about it much and feel it would have helped, so I wanted to come here and talk with anyone who going through it now or has been through it and wants to talk about if they feel it will help.

  • Hello Jasper1502 and a big welcome to Cancer Chat,

It's lovely to hear from a thyroid cancer survivor 20 years after diagnosis - your experience will be invaluable to others who are currently going through exactly what you experienced nearly 20 years ago.  I can imagine it was a scary time for you and a time when you probably felt alone with no one to talk to who had had a similar diagnosis. There was no Cancer Chat forum too for you to connect to others at the time!

I will certainly bear your message in mind if I see any member of our community who is looking to talk to someone, like you, who has had successful thyroid cancer treatment. I am sure that they will be grateful for your tips and suggestions and that your story will be inspirational to many.

Thank you so much for taking the time to come here and share your story. We are so pleased you are doing so well 20 years on.

    Best wishes,

  • Hello Jasper1502.
Im so glad to hear twenty years on you are happy to help others talk about this, so kind of you.
I’m 29 and have just been diagnosed over Christmas with thyroid cancer. I’ve got such a mixture of emotions, am I over exaggerating? Is this really my story? What if I don’t make it out of the surgery? Did I cause this in myself? How can I enjoy life now even though I should even more because of this diagnosis.
I don’t know how to even process how I feel. I have my pre op tomorrow and then operation in 16 days. I haven’t been able to sleep properly since diagnosis and just feel very alone as I live alone too.
really hope to hear from you and hope you had a lovely Christmas and new year,

I also hope this wasn’t too triggering at all

    Sophie xx

  • Hi. I had thyroid cancer 4 years ago (literally had the operation four years ago this week) and is quite a shock, but it shouldn't stop you enjoying life. I do get a bit worried when I have my yearly scans (next one coming up in two weeks so the week after that will be a bit nerve-wracking) but apart from that and taking two pills every morning, my life has not changed at all. The next couple of weeks or months will probably be worrying for you and then your life should go back to normal. Some people do find they have difficulties getting the medication right but that is a minority and even then, it should be a temporary thing.

You certainly didn't cause it in yourself. I don't think it would even be possible to do that. It's just sheer luck.

I have also never heard of anybody not coming out of the operation. I guess it could happen, but I would think it would be very unlikely. I know you think of everything though. The word cancer sounds so horrifying, you expect something really bad to happen, but for me at least, it wasn't any worse than I'd imagine something like getting your appendix or gallbladder or something out would be.

  • Hi Sophie, I'm in a similar situation to you. I had biopsy on a thyroid lump just before Christmas and have just been told yesterday that, although the biopsy was clear, the ultrasound suggests cancer so they're removing half my thyroid, hopefully within the next month. It's so hard waiting for results isn't it? I haven't slept well either. I hope the op goes well and you recover quickly.

  • Hi I’m Claire and I’m new to this chat group, I’ve recently had a full thyroidectomy and around 50 neck lymph nodes removed from my neck.

anyone facing this operation needn’t worry, it really is a straight forward procedure. Once you’ve been given your thyroxine medication and your calcium levels are good you’ll be off home again.

my next treatment is next week, I’m having Radiation iodine treatment, and am wondering if anyone else on here has had this treatment?

  • I have and it really isn't anything to worry about either. It's a bit of a nuisance with the isolating and all, but no more than that.

Hope all goes well for you.

  • Thank you. I’ve had my injections yesterday and today and I’m going in for the treatment in the morning. X

  • Had my procedure and came home the next day. Just got to keep to the restrictions now as I’m still radioactive ️

  • Hi, I'm new to all of this, I have the same as you booked for tomorrow, it's so reassuring to hear some positive stories.

  • Hi there, please don’t worry about the procedure, it really is better than you think. I had my 2 operations and my Radiation iodine treatment at two different hospitals in Liverpool. X
