Hi I was diagnosed with colon cancer advanced stage 3 last april, under went surgery for stoma as tumour was large and obstructing the colon, then had radiotherapy 8 sessions and then chemotherapy 6 cycles, in December had surgery to remove the tumour which they said was successful. However had complications from surgery aroma was changed to an ilostomy bag and have also go a hernia behind the aroma which causes sever pain after I eat. Surgeon decided that ilostomy needs to be reversed as hernia is not healing g so I'm on a partial liquid diet awaiting scans to see if surgery to reverse is viable. Any way they did a Sigmoidoscopy in March and took biopsies which have come back as abnormal cells. Nurse tells me they are not certain what it is and are going to repeat the Sigmoidoscopy as well as do a PETscan.

I never really celebrated being "cancer free" as I was in a lot of pain due to complications from the surgery and know suspect that I may not actually be cancer free, having researched it's most likely that some abnormal cells have been left behind as opposed to cancer coming back, if you know what I mean. Just not clear what it means ..... Feeling rather lost if I'm honest.

I'm so sorry to hear that you find yourself in this awful place of uncertainty at the moment. It's understandable that you're feeling lost and have questions about what the next steps will be for you regarding treatment.

Has the nurse given you an indication of when they will repeat the sigmoidoscopy and the PET scan? Hopefully you won't have to wait too long and the results will give the specialists the information they need to be able to move forwards.

We know that for many people this period of waiting for tests and results can be really difficult. The unknown can be scary and sometimes overwhelming. It can sometimes help to talk to someone about how you're feeling and I wonder if you might find it useful to chat with one of our team of nurses. I'm sure they will be happy to offer any advice, information and support they can. If you'd like to talk with them they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm excluding bank holidays.

Keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Jenny

Thanks for responding. They called me in for Sigmoidoscopy today and had to use sedation as it was too painful, which was different to the one in march. The guy said he's taken 10 biopsies but he didn't like what he was seeing and if they need to repeat then this with be an operation, I suspect he means an investigatory procedure but under operating condidtions. Have the PET on 19th.

I hate the fact that it's seems not to to be straightforward, after the operation in December to remove tumour took 9 hours, and took my almost 3 months to recovering complications and still on partial liquid diet due to hernia causing problems behind stoma, they said they would need to reverse aroma then see if hernia heals it self... Well know that's not gonna happen I suppose u til.they figure out what else is going on if it will ever be reveresed!

I have contacted the hospital cancer counselling service and have a pre assessment on Tuesday as I really think I need to talk to somebody.

The rest I'll have to wait and see, I suppose.

Sorry for be I g so negative

    Regards
