Two primary cancers

I posted some years ago about my sister's ovarian cancer. Well she has now passed her 5 year survival time. And now it is my turn. 3 years ago I was diagnosed with lung cancer, which has proved to be non aggressive and has barely advanced. So far so good. But last monthe I was told I have oesophogeal cancer and given 1 year. I have had a stent fitted, and now home. I am waiting for a visit from a palliative care team after the weekend. I just feel so weak and am really struggling. My sister is so good to me but she can't be here every day. I'd welcome any help from anyone who also has this cancer.

  • Hi Minimo,

A very warm welcome back to our forum, although I'm so sorry to hear why you are back again.

I am delighted to hear that your sister has now survived for over 5 years. I don't have any experience of oesophogeal cancer (had 2 bouts of breast cancer in past 13 years), but I notice that nobody has replied to your post in the past few days, so I just wanted to let you know that I am thinking of you.

It is good to hear that you are now home, but not that you are struggling so much. Have you had a visit from the palliative care team yet? I sincerely hope that they can make some suggestions that might improve things for you. I am sure that your sister is only too happy to help you when she can - does she live close by? There are a number of things that the palliative care team can put in place, to take some of the onus off her shoulders and which would give you both more quality time together. Do you have any other family or friends, who can give you some support?

Please keep in touch and let us know how you are getting on and remember that we are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hello Jolamine

Thank you for your reply. My sister is just 5 minutes walk away, which is such a help when I ring her at 7am to say I need help (and end up in hospital) My nephew Nick is also not far away but he and his family are all working or in education. I have yet to hear from the Palliative care team, but really hope they can help. There are places that offer lots of things like massages, or just chat groups, but I can't get out yet. I'm having to adapt to a whole new diet of soft foods, which isn't easy. Good job I like mashed potato and Magnum choc ices! My sister Janet and I do share some quality time and laugh a lot, which I treasure. I really did hope someone here who has the same cancer might have shared their experiences, but there may not be anyone.

  • Hi Minimo,

I am glad to hear that your sister and nephew are both close by. I am surprised that nobody with these types of cancer have replied to you yet. It might be worth asking the moderators to change the title of your post to include oesophoegal annd lung cancer. People often scan the titles and reply to what they can relate to.

I imagine that it is difficult to ring the changes with a soft food diet. Mashed potato and Magnum choc ices are all very well, but I expect that they'll pall after a while. I am delighted to hear that you and your sister manage some quality time together and that you laugh a lot - we still need to laugh, even in the face of adversity and after all, laughter is the best medicine!

What a pity that you haven't heard from the palliative care team yet. I do hope that they'll be in touch soon.

Thinking of you and I'm always here if you want to chat.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
