Frustrated at lack of information

I'm a clinical pharmacist working in  a GP practice. My mum is 68 and was diagnosed with end stage colon cancer at the beginning of the year. She had no symptoms until last December and has had a number of negative FIT tests, so this was all a huge shock to us all.  She has had surgery to create a stoma and starts chemotherapy next week. She has vast metastatic spread to liver and lungs wih multiple lesions. Unfortunately she doesn't want to ask about prognosis, and no one has broached this with her.  I feel as though she's making decisions without all the facts such as likely prognosis with and without treatment and a better understanding of possible outcomes.  As my mum doesn't want to know, no one will discuss this with any family member, even though my mum has provided a consent letter. We just want a better understanding of what to expect and how best to care for her in the coming months. As no one will offer any information on this I'm looking things up online, including looking at study data etc

  • Hi

    I'm just 75.

I had stage 3 or was it 4 colon and it was successfuly operated upon 3 years ago, followed by 6 months chemo. But a scan last year showed it had spread to liver. 12 months ago a heavy-duty liver op, which I survived by a whisker. A year later CT scan has shown up spots in both liver abd lung. A MRI scan in a few days.

It's just me and my prob of course. Being a relative trying to get info and with a 'reluctant' patient (your mum..) is I am sure very hard. I think of me and my mum with her dementia. There was no real way I could talk to her about it. All you could do is help as best you could. I have come on Cancer UK because it is so hard to get info from anyone med side when the questions arise. I've been told the news of the metastasis, but the next day the Qs. arrive and no way to get a quick answer, so you resport to the webdon't you.

My first query is how fast to canceers grow, dies it depend where they are. And so it is off to google for some answers.
