Well that's a shock

So I started getting pain in my wrists and hands, carpal tunnel syndrome, but also night sweats.

Had an ultrasound scan today and then got a phonecall from my GP this evening to say I have a 6cm mass on my right kidney and possibly some in my liver as well.

Should be having a CT scan and an urgent referral to the urology department in the next 2 weeks.

Wondering if I should carry on working, I am self employed, but just let my clients know what is going on

  • Hi Chippy,

I am so sorry to hear that and can certainly understand why you've found this such a shock. Whether or not you can carry on working will depend on the type of work you do and what treatment you'll have. If you can manage to work, it helps to take your mind off the cancer.  I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer and I managed to work through some parts of my treatment, but not all.

I had difficulty in sleeping at night and was totally exhausted throughout the day. Some people just sail through treatment, but others can find it quite a challenge. Why not wait to see how you get on with your CT scan first? The one advantage of being self-employed is that you can work if you feel well, but don't have to if you don't. Could you get someone in to cover for you, if you need to? I am self-employed too and I eventually had to employ a locum.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
