ca 125 test requested by Dr...terrified

Hi

Just a bit of background I suffer from a severe health anxiety after loosing my mom to bile duct cancer 5 years ago I also suffer from PCOS.  I called my Dr for a chat regarding pre menopause as I feel I am showing signs and symptoms we talked it through and he said I will run some blood tests he never said they were urgent or anything. I got my form from the Dr and the 3rd blood test requested out of 10 was ca 125 tumor marker.  I started to panic so I called the Dr as I know this is a test for ovarian cancer.  I was told on the phone as I am high risk as I am over 40 had a child at 36 and my mom also had breast cancer 10 years ago they are making sure they are covering everything.  I have no symptoms that I'm aware of I have terrible periods I always have and I have ovulation pain every month I know I have cysts on my ovaries due to the PCOS.  My blood appointment is Wednesday and I can't stop stressing and over thinking that they are keeping something from me!.

Thank you for reading.

  • Hello Loopy123,

Try not to panic if you can - I know it's easier said than done especially if you suffer from health anxiety but it sounds like your doctor is just being thorough and them ordering a CA125 blood test doesn't mean they suspect cancer at all. You can read more about the CA125 blood test at the bottom of this page and you will see that a raised CA125 can be caused by other conditions than ovarian cancer so don't be alarmed if you are told your levels are higher than normal.

Rest assured they are definitely not keeping anything from you but simply being thorough and running some tests after you mentioned you thought you were going through pre-menopause.

I hope that you will hear from other ladies here who have been in a similar situation and had to have the CA125 blood test for similar reasons.

Best of luck for your appointment on Wednesday. I hope it all goes well!

    Best wishes,
