Mastectomy

Hi, I had a mastectomy 3 weeks ago, due to a recurrence from 10 years ago I was grade2 invasive with high grade DCIs, slnb has micrometastatic er/pr both 8, waiting for treatment plan, feeling really low due to everything wonderered if anyone else had similar situation and what was there treatment plan, thank you.

  • Hi Patricia

Mine isn't the same but happy to share my story if it will help.

I was diagnosed in October 2021 with Er and Pr + HER negative grade 2 cancer in my right breast.  I had a mastectomy which revealed a 2.5cm tumour with 18 of the 30 nodes taken being positive.

Since then I have had chemotherapy and radiotherapy and am on hormone blockers and CDK4/6 inhibitors as well as zometa to strengthen my bones

it was a rough diagnosis but I've currently no reason to feel anything but positive.

    Thinking of you xxx

  • Thank you for your reply, I like you feel positive the cancer has gone, I guess I feel like I am on a rollercoaster with my feelings, and still waiting for my treatment plan, and feel dam unlucky it came back. Thank you stay positive and I will try to x

    Hi Patricia,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am so sorry to hear that you are facing this for a second time. Is this the same type of cancer as your first diagnosis? I have Colloid cancer. I was initially told that, if I had to have cancer, then this was one of the best types to have, as it wasn't very aggressive. I had a lumpectomy 13 years ago, followed by Tamoxifen. Six months later I found a larger tumour in my other breast. Fortunately, although my surgeon was pretty certain that this was cancerous too, biopsy proved otherwise.

Almost a year to the day of my first surgery, I found another lump in my original breast. Unfortunately, this was another primary cancer. I had a double mastectomy, as my surgeon felt that, although the second tumour was clear, it appeared pre-cancerous. I took Letrozole for 6 and a half years after that.

This rollercoaster of feelings that you describe is perfectly normal. You will feel better once you have your treament plan in place. Have you had an Oncotype DX test? This helps to show who is most likely to benefit from chemo and also how likely the cancer is to recur. IF you haven't had this, it might be worth discussing this with your care team. Have you any idea when you will get your treatment plan? - I do hope that you don't have long to wait.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,
    Jolamine xx

  • I am sorry to hear about your experience, my first experience was with a lumpectomy, rads, hormone therapy, that was 12 years ago, just before Christmas I found a mass on the top part of my breast, luckily I was under surveillance due to family history so my yearly mamagram was in 2 weeks after feeling the mass, so everything went mad for me from that, I had a grade 2 invasive with high grade DCIs so mastectomy was 15 feb, it had spread around the breast so got told mastectomy was the right decision, they found micrometastatic in the lymph nodes, so they are doing the Oncotype dx, it's been a week since this has been done so waiting for my results and treatment plan, they are going to ct scan me every 3 months thorax scan, I am really really trying to deal with it all I feel ok one moment  then overwhelmed the next I feel scared but I will get there, you sound so lovely and careing, I hope you are as well as can be expected, thank you x

    Hi Patricia,

It sounds as if it was fortunate that you are still getting annual surveillance. I am glad to hear that you have already had your Oncotype DX test and I expect that your care team are waiting on the results of this, before deciding  what treatment will be best for you. Have they told you when to expect the results back? It is also good to hear that they plan to scan you every 3 months. This is one thing that I miss. Despite having a family history of breast cancer, they stopped my scans 5 years after my first diagnosis.

It is hard not to feel scared. As I said, it's  a case of up one minute and down the next.  Try to take heart - there are many ladies here who are dealing with the same as you. They are doing well many years after diagnosis. Do you have a good support network from family and friends? It is not a pleasant thought having to go through treatment again, but at least you can have treatment and, by this time next year, it will hopefully just be a memory.

I am fortunate that I am still living a busy and fulfilled life. I have had several bumps along the way, so this is the new me post cancer, but I feel fortunate to still be here and every new day is a blessing.

Take care and keep in touch.
    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you jolamine, I will keep in touch and let you know, I have a good support network around me, I feel talking to people who has had the same experience understands more but my family are great, and yes us ladies are strong and yes every day is such a blessing such a blessing, if ever you want a chat I will be here, what doesn't break us makes us stronger, big hug to you Trisha xx

  • Hi Trisha,

I am glad to hear that you have a good support network around you. No matter how good this is, it is always helpful to be able to talk to others who have first hand experience and to talk about things as they are, instead of worrying loved ones. I have found this forum to have been of great solace over the years.

    Kind regards,
