Overian cancer or perimenopause??

Sorry for long post- So have just recently turned 40 and  I started my peroids at a young age of 11 and throughout my cycles have been pretty regularly give or take a few days either side. Sometimes extremely heavy and clotting. Then in my early 30s I had pre cancerous cells lasered from having a routine smear test.

Last 12 months have had the odd spotting in between peroids. Last September I saw my doctor because I was having trouble with my joints and some other issues and she briefly spoke it could be also to do with the perimenopause so she requested I had some bloods done for my hormone levels which came back fine. Anyway Jan this year I had a normal cycle heavy bleeding lasting longer than 5 days. Feb This month my peroid was due on 4th and it never showed up I was getting cramping and pmt and I had spotting on 9th so I thought great peroid is coming after being 5 days late. But spotting was light and lasted a day I'm now 23 days late and 37 days past ovulation. Which have done a few pregnancy tests has I thought I may be pregnant but all came back negative. So with the symptoms have had for last 3-6 months of;

Bloatedness

Constipation

Heartburn

Tired/ no energy

Pain all across my lower back

Pain in my pelvic/hip area

Lower abdo pain

Cramping like I'm coming on

One min I'm ok then I'm emotional then I'm raging.

Hot sweats

Peeing alot

I thought it was time I paid my GP a visit so on Friday I attended seeing him. He was really lovely and obviously thought it would be wise to eliminate the worse scenario of ovarian cancer ( has my mum has had triple negative breast cancer)and then go down the perimenopause/menopause route if all is clear. So I had a CA125 blood test and have to have a ultra sound scan next week plus hes also referred me to the gynecologist.

Just wondering how many more ladies are having the same problem and whether they was diagnosed with ovarian cancer or menopause? I know the CA125 isn't always reliable at picking up this type of cancer. I'm trying to remain postive has I have a 9 year old child but I do feel anxious has I can't believe that all of sudden my peroids have stopped and the symptoms I have cross ref ovarian  as well as menopause.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

  • Hello Ellie1983

I'm sorry to hear that you've been having some ongoing health concerns over the past 12 months. It sounds like it's been difficult for you at times and it's understandable that you're feeling anxious now that your GP has mentioned checking for ovarian cancer.

You're right when you say that the CA125 test isn't always reliable. A raised result can be caused by gynaecological conditions other than cancer so even if this result does come back outside of the normal range then try not to worry too much. Hopefully, the ultrasound will give you some further reassurance.

It sounds like your GP is supportive and wants to try and get to the bottom of this for you which is great to head. Hopefully if we have any other ladies who have had similar symptoms they'll post to share their experiences with you but in the meantime, if you want to chat things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

I hope you have some news soon. Keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
