Long story, not a hernia, fast tracked to wrong department?

Hi, my wife 37yo had a lump suddenly appear one day in her groin area (early Dec last year), she had done some heavy lifting the day earlier so we thought it was a hernia (she's very fit and active), in mid December she went to the doctors and saw a nurse, the nurse sent her for bloods including ca125 because the lump I suppose is in that region she also referred her for a community ultrasound...bloods came back fine between Christmas and new year, I phoned the docs mid jan because we had not heard about the ultrasound app only to be told the nurse forgot to send the referral...she managed to have an ultrasound earlier this month for a suspected hernia...results came back to show it wasn't a hernia but a solid mass that was highly suspicious of malignancy and they were querying a bowel mass or a pathogenic lymph node...got fastracked to gynae who said "I don't know why you're here, this isn't gynae related" the gynae consultant felt the lump and said "to me that's just a hernia" a junior doctor there also said the same...from that we were fast tracked to have a CT by gynae anyway...which we are waiting the results for...after this I got a call back from the gp who said "it's def not a hernia, there's no gut in it and ultrasounds are really reliable" has this happened to any one before? I'm panicking because I'm imagining a lymph node that has become cancerous from a tumour elsewhere in her body and it's too late  she's completely normal, no symptoms... any advice or knowledge would help...thank you

  • Hi Meg and welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry for the confusion and worry that this has caused. This must be very frustrating. If it's possible, maybe you and wife could sit down with her GP to talk through your concerns and get this all cleared up. If there is more than one doctor working at your GP surgery, you could try getting a second opinion as well.

Hopefully some of our members will share their thoughts and experiences with you soon but in the meantime, if you'd like to talk any of this through with one of our nurses, you're very welcome to do so on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very supportive and will do all they can to help.

We're thinking of you Meg and hope you and your wife are able to get some much needed answers and peace of mind over this soon.

    Best wishes to you both,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
