New breast cancer diagnosis

Hi - first a big shout out to NHS; despite all its current difficulties they have been extraordinary at all levels. Friday 13 (couldn't make it up ), noticed left breast swollen & hard above nipple. Saw GP on Mon 16; Breast Surgery clinic Tue 24 (results of exam, mammogram & ultra sound) indicated 10cm malignant tumour + blood test; full bone & CT scans on Fri 27. Wed 8 met Breast Surgery consultant & two of her team + breast cancer nurse. Results primary invasive breast cancer with node 1; no secondary ; oestrogen +ve receptor plus HER-2 positive receptor. Treatment plan: chemo (FEC & EC-T); mastectomy + axial nodes; radiotherapy; & finish with hormone therapy. I'm good, hardest period was waiting between Fri 27 & Wed 8, and breaking news to my daughters. Now I'm waiting to see whether oncologist will agree to chemo regime, they were reticent due to me being T2 diabetic (in remission). Surgery is scheduled for Mar 6, unless chemo is approved. Due to size of tumour I'm hoping for chemo; who would have thought. Plans for 2023 have been put on hold.

  • Hello

    welcome Barca

it's a shock at first this was me in 22 I'm now finished and like a fizzy pop bottle , it's a hard road bumpy but you can do it

good luck I wish you all the best big hugs love Lara ️

  • Hi Lara - I'm expecting to feel physically grim BUT very much with a successful outcome - no gain without pain! Thx so much for your msg & love. So good & glad to hear your outcome I'm 69 & the women in my family (back to great, great grandmothers) are long lived. From mid 80s to early 90s - ladies born from 1850 onwards. My mother died in 2021 at age 95, so I'm hoping to add some 15yrs at least - have a long "to do" list a little up ended due to mother's health issues & pandemic - some catching up to do in 2024.

    Hi Barca,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am glad to see that you have caught this early and have plans in place to zap it. The NHS really are amazing with cancer treatments and you are in the best hands. When are you due to see your Oncologist? I hope that s/he will agree with the chemo regime. I am sorry to hear about the loss of your mum. You have had a hard couple of years and have another tough one ahead, but it is doable and, with your positive attitude, I'm sure that you'll smash it.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you're getting on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi - thx so much. What's wonderful to be surrounded by a "sisterhood" who understands what all of us are going through. It's amazing to have the support without being made to feel an invalid or worse still incapacitated. Xx love to u all.

  • Hi Jolamine,

Im Exeter based & have to give a big shout out for GP services & all staff at my Hospital. Don't for a local Macmillan centre, but a similar/associated organisation FORCE. They are based in the hospital grounds real bonus.
So oncology app Wednesday 22 am. Have read up & on the two regimes I'll follow (I'm ER+ & HER2+ unusual). Had to read in stages to assimilate, & not be deterred. I prefer to prepare for worst - hey ho. Focused on outcome & relieved to find that there are no particular issues with being diabetic; now simply a matter of general state of health as a diabetic. Luckily I'm otherwise in good health, not on medication, & controlled through diet & exercise. All augurs well. .

    Kind regards Ana xx

  • Hi Ana,

I have had 2 bouts of cancer. The first was 13 years ago and the second was the following year. I had a lumpectomy and a double mastectomy. I have type 2 Diabetes too and I had no trouble with treatment. I didn't have a good experience in the first hospital I attended, but what a difference I found after I changed hospitals. I had a fantastic team who all worked well together. As a patient, this made such a difference to how I felt moving forward. We really do need to be able to put our trust in our care teams and are so fortunate to have the NHS at our behest.

I am glad to hear that you have found FORCE to be helpful. There are so many different support groups throughout the country who are there for us at our time of need - I dread to think where we would be without them. I'm like you, I like to preparefor all eventualities and, if you're prepared for the worse, it can only get better from there. I hope that your appointment on Wednesday goes well.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
